Acquisition Strengthens Quest Software's Monitoring Business
IRVINE, Calif., March 13, 2002 – Quest Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: QSFT), a leading provider of
application management solutions, today announced the acquisition of Montreal-based BB4
Technologies, Inc., creators of the Big Brother System and Network Monitor. Big Brother, the
first System and Network monitor to use the Web for publishing status information, is widely
used in the system administrator community. With this acquisition, Quest Software plans to
further enhance Big Brother and expand its user community by providing customers with a
certified commercial version of the product, while continuing to maintain the free version for non-commercial
use.
Adding Big Brother to Quest Software's existing product suite gives customers a
monitoring solution that scales to meet their needs. Big Brother is a low-cost, lightweight monitor
designed for organizations that need to monitor hundreds or even thousands of systems to
maintain availability. Quest's existing monitoring solution, Foglight ® , delivers in-depth monitoring
capabilities for critical business applications with integrated diagnostics for quick problem
resolution. With the combined offering, Quest Software now delivers the breadth and depth an
enterprise needs to maintain optimal performance and availability.
"Quest Software is very excited about the acquisition of Big Brother. Providing easy to
use, lightweight products has always been a Quest philosophy and Big Brother obviously has
that same philosophy—making this acquisition a natural fit" said Vinny Smith, CEO of Quest
Software.
The founders of BB4 Technologies, Sean MacGuire and Robert-André Croteau, saw a
clear opportunity to leverage the strengths of Big Brother with Quest Software to build the most
comprehensive, yet easy-to-deploy and use monitoring solution available. "We are elated to join
the Quest family. This acquisition will not only benefit our software and our users, but also gives
us access to the extensive resources Quest has to offer to further develop Big Brother and
expand our user community. The Big Brother community will benefit tremendously from this
acquisition, since we will now offer technical support through Quest's renowned Support
organization as well as provide certified product releases, continued product enhancements,
and integration with Quest Software's in-depth diagnostics solutions."
Big Brother is a Web-based monitor that helps organizations maintain system and
network availability by detecting problems and notifying systems administrators immediately via
pager, e-mail alert or text message. In addition, it provides access to historical information so
users can view prior issues, and track statistics to determine if service levels are being met. Big
Brother uses a unique color-coded display to show the current system and network status and is
designed to let users remotely view how monitored systems are performing from any Web
browser or WAP device, such as a Blackberry or cellular telephone. For additional information
